Types of Research & Research Methodology - Media Research

Types of Research:-

There are two types of research which can be done to develop a thesis or dissertation:

Practical Research: This type of research involves first-hand experience with the topic being researched. This could take the form of surveys, interviews, observations, and discussion groups.

Theoretical Research: This type of research is based mostly on published works, such as books, articles, published academic journals, and court records. It does not involve first-hand experience with the topic.

Types of Research Methodology

Qualitative.

Qualitative research methods involve describing specific situations in detail using research tools like interviews, surveys, and observations. This type of research focuses on gathering verbal data rather than measurements.

Descriptive/Quantitative

Quantitative research is a type of research that deals with numerical and statistical explanations. This type of research requires data that can be quantified, or turned into numbers. In order to do this type of research effectively, researchers need to understand the assumptions that come with different statistical models. When quantitative research is carried out correctly, it generates numerical data that can be presented in the form of tables and statistics.

Correlation/Regression Analysis

This research methodology seeks to understand the strength of the relationship between two or more variables. For example, this could be used to examine whether there is a correlation between violent video games and aggression in children.

Quasi-Experimental

The purpose of this research is to compare two groups, one of which is influenced by an outside source, and the other of which is not.

Experimental

While researchers will use different methods to study a chosen topic, one popular way to collect data is through the use of an experiment. In an experiment, there are two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group is the group that receives the intervention while the control group does not receive any intervention. The control group is important because it acts as a positive control for the experiment. That is, the experimental group's results can be compared to the control group's results in order to see the effects of the intervention.

Meta-Analysis

This research method is useful for finding out the overall or combined effect of several different studies on a hypothesis.
