What is Soft News & Hard News - Difference between Soft News and Hard News in Simple Language.

Soft News and Hard News are the terms that are very often used in Journalism, both Print Journalism and Digital Journalism. They both are the types of news that are served to the people.

In simple words Soft News are the type of news that is basically related to Entertainment, Lifestyle, Art, Tourism, Daily Sports, Fitness, Culture etc. which doesn't impact masses of people's daily lifestyle. It often relates to people's personal lives. You can also say that in Soft News the background information of Hard News is provided. Soft News is the opposite of Hard News. Soft News is generally less important than the Hard News but attracts more people. It is because people like to read these types of News more, like reading a movie review or knowing about an upcoming smartphone or about a tourist place. They are human-interest type stories.



While Hard News is something that is considered as Breaking News. It deals with really serious topics and events. Hard News impacts the lifestyle of the masses in a way or the other. It is a fast paced news that often appears at the front of the newspaper or as the top news. Like death of a famous personality, major change in share markets, major crime case, earthquake, election results, international news, major accidents causing loss of life of many people, etc.Soft News may cover the background information of the Hard News later when more information is gathered. In TV usually we see more about Hard News than the Soft News because it is considered as more important than the Soft News. It also generally focuses on the 5 Ws and 1 H. They are:

2. When
3. Why
4. Where
5. What
and How.
