What is Journalism? Sources of News and Qualities of a Journalist

Journalism in simple words is collecting or obtaining various news event stories happening over the world and distributing or presenting them to the masses of people. In other words it is a business of timely knowledge, the business of obtaining the necessary facts and evaluating them carefully or presenting them fully to the people. Journalism is derived from the French word "Journee" which means day of work and it indicates the collection and periodical publication of current news and events of the business of managing, writing and editing for journals or newspapers, magazines etc.



The qualities of a Journalist are:
- News Sense (Connecting the story you are reporting to the readers and have proper sense on what you are reporting)
- Clarity and Objectives
- Accuracy (How accurate you are with your news report)
- Alertness/Nose for News (Should always be alert and skill for discovering things to report)
- Skepticism (A questioning attitude towards different things)
- Fearless and Friendly
- Composed and Calm Nature
- Farsightedness (Thinking and analyzing more than you just see and hear)
- Humorous (A little humor is nice too)
- Unbiased
- Wordsmith (Playing with different words in your report)
- Integrity (Being honest with your news report)

- Government Officials - Police, Army, Political Parties etc.
- Hospitals
- Courts
- Press Conferences
- Victim and Lawyers
- Witnesses and Criminals
- Domestic Staffs
- Family members, neighbors, friends, colleagues etc.
